Competition Events – Overview

The BCFL Tournaments offer eight speech events and three Debate events, plus Student Congress. Further information is linked from each event including the event Ballots and Critiques. All ballots, critiques, and procedures are those used at the NCFL Grand National Tournament. (See Resources for Sample Ballots.) Tournament rules and procedures are documented in the NCFL bylaws.

In addition, we are adding a pilot program new for the 2026-2027 academic speech and debate season. Students that will be in the 7th grade and 8th grade will be eligible to compete in the following events:

  • Speech events: Declamation, Children’s Literature, Impromptu Speaking
  •  Debate events: JV Policy, JV Public Forum, JV Lincoln Douglas

A $10 registration fee for each school with registered students will be payable at each tournament.   A hardship waiver is available for schools under financial strain. School coaches interested in having their 7th grade and 8th grade students compete should email Diocesan Director Steve Sprouse for more information and the forms to be completed at ddbcfl@gmail.com
